How does a reverse osmosis (RO) system work?

Reverse Osmosis is a process in which water is forced under pressure through a series of filters and a special membrane.

There are 4 main stages to a reverse osmosis system:

  1. Sediment Filtration: Removes particulate such as sand, silt and dirt particles.
  2. Carbon Filtration: Removes chlorine and organic contaminants such as PCB’s, THM’s, Herbicides and pesticides
  3. Reverse Osmosis: Water is then forced under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane which permits the passage of water molecules but rejects and flushes to the drain any inorganic contaminants such as mineral salts, heavy metals, dissolved solids and biological impurities
  4. Carbon Filtration: Removes any remaining tastes and odours

Reverse osmosis is a relatively slow process, so a pressurized tank is used to store water and to pressurize the water line to the faucet.

How long do the filters last?

It is recommended that you change the filters at least every 12 months.

How often should the membrane be replaced?

The membrane will typically last 3-5 years, depending on the quality of your incoming water. Softened water will generally double the life expectancy of an RO membrane.

Where can a RO system be installed?

The RO system can be installed under the sink, in an adjoining cabinet or in a remote location in the basement as long as there is access to run a flexible water line to the kitchen sink.

Can I connect a RO system to my refrigerator?

Yes, a RO system can be hooked up to the water line in a refrigerator.
